What Do Spark Plugs Do?
They ignite the mixture of oxygen and fuel a vehicle's engine needs to burn for power.
How Do Spark Plugs Work?
The process, called spark ignition, starts when the key turns in the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch trips. The car battery, plus other ignition parts, like a starter motor, a starter solenoid, and an ignition coil, then start to generate electricity. The charge travels to the plugs' leads, which capture it, and combustion occurs. The engine's pistons then begin to pump, and its crankshaft turns. The vehicle then starts and, thanks to the alternator, remains running.
In short, no engine could start at all, let alone run, without spark plugs.
What are the Symptoms of Spark Plugs Going Bad?
- Widening leads
- Inferior conductivity
- Hard starts
- A marked drop in fuel economy
- Engine misfires
- Idling roughly
- Problems speeding up
- Physical deterioration and breakage
When Should Spark Plugs Be Changed?
If you see any of the aforementioned signs, or if an engine inspection's results suggest you need to replace them. Otherwise, be sure to make the change before they surpass the kilometrage limits specified in your owner's manual.
