What are Brake Pads?

They're friction-generating surfaces. You'll find them installed atop the brake calipers in your vehicle's disc brake system. They're critical to the brakes working properly without getting damaged.

What Do Brake Pads Do?

Put simply, they contact brake rotors. As they rub against the rotors, they produce the above-mentioned resistance; your vehicle uses it to slow down and stop.

What Types of Brake Pads are There?

There are four: organic, metallic, ceramic, and carbon fiber.

Organic Brake Pads

These are made for normal, everyday driving. They're reliable on most roads and in common weather conditions, being made of materials like rubber, carbon, or glass/fiberglass and joined by resin. They're also relatively easy on rotors, their brake dust is minimal, and best of all, they're inexpensive.

Metallic Brake Pads

These provide a firmer grip than usual when the brake pedal is pressed. They're made of metals like copper, iron, and steel, or an alloy of them. They also resist both heat's effects and fading.

Ceramic Brake Pads

These are made of a denser, more resilient variant of the earthenware material. They're more dependable in wet weather, their brake dust doesn't stick as much, and they're quieter than usual.

Carbon Fiber Brake Pads

These are exceptionally strong, made of a filamentous crystalline polymer that's highly heat-resistant. It's sometimes called graphite fiber, alternatively. They provide the ultimate in stopping power.

When Do You Replace Brake Pads?

At 64,000-to-80,000-kilometer intervals, most of the time. Otherwise, do so when you see signs of trouble with them.

What are the Symptoms of Brake Pads Needing to be Changed?

• Lit ABS and/or brake warning lights
• Damaged pads
• Worn pad surfaces
• Whining sounds when braking
• Vibrating brakes
• Slowing down and stopping taking longer than usual
• Grinding noises (suggesting possible rotor damage)
