You could also start to hear unusual noises, like whistling, coming from the cabin's vents, and the air in-cabin could start to smell dirty or stale. Perhaps most obviously, you could find dirt in the filters, or discover that the media itself has worn out.

When Do You Change Air Filters Otherwise?

Every 19,000 to 24,000 kilometers approximately, or at least once a year. At any rate, no later than every 48,000 kilometers. For more specifics, review your owner's manual.
